“Happiness in Slavery” 2025, Steel chain, acorn nuts, threaded rod, aluminum tubing, 84"x64"x36"

This sculpture was inspired by an object that I had collected from "The Playground", and is a common piece of playground equipment. I am interested in this object because the material of the chain directly contradicts the metaphor of a ladder as an object that can take you closer to god. I'm thinking about liberation and the chains that we hold on to in the form of internalized oppressions and white supremacy, which will never set us free.

This is a free standing sculpture. It is not leaning against the wall, nor is it tethered to the ceiling.
