This series is located at a site that I’ve named "The Playground", a waterfront lot used as a dump by the NYC Parks Department located at the border of Greenpoint and Williamsburg. One cold winter morning, I made a series of sculptures by arranging only materials found at the site and documented it with one roll of film. While I was creating these sculptures, I felt the weight of the site. Having an unrestricted view of Manhattan and being surrounded by new development, I could only imagine the property value. But what is the value of a waterfront property during a climate crisis?
</image:caption>
During my first visit to “The Playground” I took photos and gathered objects. Among the objects was this piece of chain-link fence that had a peculiar bend. I was intrigued because the bend was evidence of time passed, of something that happened, rendering the fence useless. I added the strip of light to highlight the bend, and turn it into a portal.

To complete the sculpture, I scavenged for a pole for the fragment to be attached. I cut the pole from a fence that was in use but unnecessary. Then I buffed and polished the galvanized steel of the fence components to elevate it into something irregular.
</image:caption>
Above is a picture of a object found at River Rd and Union Ave in Passaic NJ, the exact location where Robert Smithson got off the bus in his essay, A Tour of the Monuments of Passaic, New Jersey. In an attempt to walk the same path as him, I started at this location only to find a street sign ripped half way to form a tri-leg structure. When I encountered this object, I experienced a suspended moment of judgement in which I tired to understand how this object happend it arrived at this particular location. The location's significance and the form of the street sign hint towards a thoughtfully placed art object, but ultimately, it is unclear whether this object is accidental or intentional.

In an attept to investigat thecause of the post’s bends, I recreated the object, pictured below.
At one end of Old Point is a view of the Kennebec river that is owned and maintained by an man with a fruit and vegetable stand. On his property has a barrier along the rivers edge and the road. On my second visit to the site, I approached him if I could use the post for an art project, and that I would put it back. He agreed.

I wanted the post to be returned having evidence of an unnatural occurrence. I wanted the memory of metal to show an unmistakably intentional wound.

<image:caption>When I returned to reinstall the modified post, the landowner was a bit bamboozled, as he didn’t realize I was going to bring it back. I bought him a bottle of Jack Daniel’s. In my research, I read that British colonists would “trade” goods like rum for large swathes of land. The indigenous population, with different conceptions of land ownership thought they were allowing the British to use and pass though the land. I felt the exchange fitting, as I left saying “thank you for letting me use your property”.</image:caption>

The following three bodies of work were made while I was a participant at Skowhegan school of Painting and Sculpture, where I did research on the 1724 massacre of Norridgewock. Now named Old Point, the land was originally home to an Indigenous village, and In 1694 father Sebastian Rasle, a French missionary, settled at there to establish a Jesuit Mission. After a few quarrels, there was a bounty on father Rasle’s scalp and in August of 1724 British colonists massacred the community of Norridgewock. There were survivors. They returned to bury their dead, but relocated to other parts of their land
The current land use of Old Point is split between private property and a cemetery, and is nestled between father rasle road and the Kennebec River.
Leading up to the monument to Father Rasle, are rows and rows of headstones with European names. This gate was found discarded, leaning against the smaller monument.

To me this gate is a symbol of property and control of movement on stolen land. At first I wanted to minimize the gate through a crumpling gesture, then I thought about torturing the gate. I landed on scalping it. To scalp someone is used to have a piece of the body as a stand in for the whole thing, a sort of trophy. This object was also a sort of trophy to me. </image:caption>

                                            <image:caption>While on residency in Dortmund, Germany, I found the site of a former steel plant that was going to become a mixed use development for the local university. This particular lot had remained in ruins from a demolition in 2020. Among the debris were five clusters of twisted rebar with tentacles up to 7 feet long that erupted from the foundation. I painted one of the rebar clusters rainbow to inject the space with a bit of magic. The first day of painting, I was asked to leave by security. I returned a couple days later to complete the paint job. </image:caption>
At dawn one day when the Big-tipi was closed, I jumped the fence and headed to the fire pit. I cleaned the pit of any debris, and I lit a candle and recited a spell to enchant the charcoal with magic. I then proceded to rub the Wild fire charcoal into the ash and charcoal of the pit, until it was blacked and filled the area of the pit.

The intention of the spell was for individuals who enjoy future fires at the big tipi to become concerned with the 21st century Indigenous person, not a romanticized fiction. indigenous land stewardship is important for the future of our planet as climate justice is so closely linked to indigenous rights.

I walked by this countless times until I noticed the unused display between the store entrance and the neighboring building. I asked the shop owner if I could make a neon to go inside, and after he agreed, I began fabricating the sculpture. The light remains on 24/7, and is up indefinitely at 329 Knickerbocker Ave.
Central Park Wormhole, 2020

A few weeks before the covid lockdown of March 2020, I went to Central Park in search of street performers who make oversized bubbles for tips. I like to think of these bubbles as having alternate identity and purpose as wormholes, one where space and time collapses and we can transport ourselves into another reality. When the bubble pops, the portal is closed.

In 2021 I gathered a few orange cones with the intention to make them fuzzy and replace them with cones that were in use. I invisioned this to be an ongoing project where eventually all the cones in the neighborhood would be fuzzy ones. I documented the movement of the cones through instagram stories.

Above is an image of three orange cones, but the middle one is fuzzy.
Below is a detail of the velvety texture that the flocking produces.
